Dr Abeyratne has a wealth of experience, having worked in Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. He is a trained general physician from Sri Lanka. After migrating to Australia, he perused his passion for gerontology and underwent further training in Geriatric Medicine in Australia. He has been living and working on the Sunshine Coast since 2010. 

Together with Drs. Tampiyappa and Harrington, Dr Abeyratne established the Orthogeriatric model of care at Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service. It is still the only facility in Queensland that accepts patients with hip fractures under the direct supervision of a geriatrician. He was the orthogeriatric clinical lead and the main geriatrician providing orthogeriatric care at the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service from 2014 to 2021. 

With an emphasis on acute geriatric medicine, perioperative care, and cognitive impairment, he works in both public and private hospitals in the Sunshine Coast.

Dr Abeyratne has a special interest in memory disorders and comprehensive assessment prior to TAVI and perioperative care.
