Dr Winkel graduated from the University of Queensland in 2009, before being introduced to the Sunshine Coast as a Junior Doctor. He then moved to Melbourne to learn the art of Neurology, primarily at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, one of the leading research institutions in Australia. He undertook additional Fellowships in both Epilepsy and Neuromuscular diseases (including Neurophysiology - nerve and muscle testing), whilst also undertaking a PhD through the University of Melbourne. He then returned to the Sunshine Coast in 2018 with his young family to help expand the tertiary Neurology service at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, and he plans to practice on the Sunshine Coast for the rest of his life.
In 2019 he co-founded Beach Brain with Dr Tampiyappa. In 2020, he became Director of Neurosciences at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, and is working hard to expand the accessibility of Neuroscience services on the Sunshine Coast.
His main clinical interests include Neuromuscular Diseases (eg. motor neurone disease, muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, GBS/CIDP, Charcot-Marie Tooth etc) and developing advanced Neurophysiology Testing capabilities in the region to improve the accuracy of diagnosis. He is a Founding Board Member of the Neuromuscular Society of Australia and New Zealand and has an active research interest in neuromuscular disease, with active collaborations both Nationally and Internationally with other experts in the area.
He has hospital appointments at SCUH and SCUPH.
